Lesufi stands for teacher remuneration

JOBURG – Education MEC has made a submission to the Teacher Remuneration Review Commission which could benefit teachers.

The 1 500 teachers who left the profession in Gauteng last year was a worrying statistic for Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi.

On 11 March, Lesufi made a submission to the Presidential Remuneration Review Commission on the policy proposals and recommendations for the attraction and retention of educators in the public education system.

According to Lesufi, teachers leave the profession because of their poor remuneration. “In the past, we used to know that the most beautiful house in the street belonged to a teacher but, unfortunately, this cannot be said today because teachers do not earn enough,” said Lesufi.

Among the proposals which the MEC submitted is the tax incentive exemption for educators in the public education system. This is a move that has been welcomed by the Professional Educators Union (PEU). General secretary for the union Ben Machipi said this will benefit the teachers should the review commission accepts and acts on the proposals made by the MEC. “Our members are really having it hard, it’s not easy for them to survive on what they are currently earning,” explained Machipi.

The Presidential Remuneration Review Commission was formally established in August 2013, to review the remuneration policy framework of the public service, with the aim of ensuring its effectiveness, efficiency and aligning it with improvement in service delivery.
