Workers take on CalgroM3

Developer accused of using illegal immigrant labour.

Unemployed workers from Fleurhof and Meadowlands picketed outside the development giant CalgroM3’s offices on Friday.

The protest organised by Soweto Business Concern (SBC) saw about a 100 plackard waving labourers dancing and chanting outside the building while police and metro police kept a watchful eye.

The SBC handed over a memorandum to CalgroM3 representative Tinus Erasmus in which they accuse the developer of exploiting illegal imagrant labour by paying them R80 a day instead of the required minimum wage of R160, that they have not done any skills implementation or transfer and that local contractors and workers were not given preference.

The workers have given CalgroM3 seven days to respond to their demands.

Erasmus declined to comment saying the company would prefer to use the seven day grace period in order to study the memorandum and make a constructive contribution to the dialogue.
