Suspect shot dead by elderly man

A suspect was shot and killed when he was confronted after trying to steal a bakkie last weekend.

On Saturday morning (7 March) between 2 and 3 am the man was fidgeting with a bakkie parked at a house in Adam Street, Mindalore, Western Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) spokesperson Frik van Zyl said.

The bakkie belonged to an elderly man who confronted the suspect when he heard the commotion outside. The suspect proceeded to shoot at the resident, inflicting wounds to his leg and side.

The elderly resident retaliated with gunfire. The suspect was shot and killed by a bullet to the chest.
Mindalore Block Watch patroller Tom Smith and patrol manager Pierre Pretorius were first to react to the scene as they heard gun shots from nearby.

“We found his daughter’s boyfriend in the road when we got to the scene,” Smith said.

“After the shooting the suspect was lying on the grass and the man went back to the house where his wife nursed him while they waited for an ambulance to arrive.”

Smith said that normally more than one suspect will be on scene to steal a vehicle so the patrollers searched the premises.

Allegedly a second suspect fled by jumping over the neighbour’s wall.

“The police also responded to the scene and a case has been opened,” Smith said.

“The resident is gaining his strength in Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital and should all go well, he will be released soon,” Smith told the Record.

Krugersdorp Police spokesperson Sergeant Tshepisho Mashale committed to commenting on the case at a later stage.
