Sector 2 CPF chairman Neville Burnett says residents who live inside complexes have a warped sense of security when it comes to living in a complex.
“They think because they live behind high walls and electric fences they are safe and won’t be broken into but more burglaries happen within these complexes than in normal houses,” he said.
He explained that one of the main reasons why complexes are so unsafe is because police can’t enter these complexes due to restricted access.
Burnett said, “Make the residents pay attention to what is going on around them and to get to know their neighbours. By doing this, residents can curb crime and burglaries by reacting quicker.”
Sector 2 manager Sergeant Nicholas Makhura added, “Join your nearest Resident’s Association (RA) and make the tenants around you aware of the safety measures in place in the event of a breaking-in.”
The following tips were supplied by Burnett to help residents to secure themselves and their families inside a complex:
- When entering and exiting the property, make sure that you are not tailgated by checking that the gate closes behind your vehicle.
- If security guards are employed at the complex, make sure that they patrol the whole complex.
- Keep your gate remotes in a safe place.
- Lock your security gates.
- Report transgressions of the security measures to the Body Corporate and make sure that corrective action is taken.
