JRA strike turns violent

JOBURG – JRA's 'peaceful' strike turns into a violent strike on day three of the Road Agency's strike in conjunction with the South African Municipal Workers Union.

Workers from the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) embarked on a strike that started on 27 February and the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) promised that the strike will be peaceful, but according to JRA it is not.

JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers explained that the demands include the introduction of a new pay progression system and various increase demands.

She said, “After day three of the strike we are concerned about reports that have surfaced of four separate acts of intimidation and damage to non-striking employees’ properties.”

“We strongly condemn this irresponsible behaviour that is in flagrant disregard of the agreement between Samwu and Management, where both parties agreed to a peaceful strike, free of intimidation,” said Skhumbuzo Macozoma, Managing Director at JRA.

He continued, “We will escalate our concerns to Samwu leadership, and cases have been opened with the police for further investigation. Evidence is also being gathered with the intention of instituting disciplinary action against the culprits.”

“Management remains committed to returning to the negotiation table and a meeting is being scheduled with the multi-disciplinary team and SAMWU,” concluded Peters-Scheepers.
