Whatsapp to fight crime

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Whatsapp group to target crime in local community.

Communication is key – especially when it comes to fighting crime, says RiverWel Resident’s Association (RWRA) member and CPF Sector 2 chairman Neville Burnett.

In an effort to control crime in the area, the RWRA decided to open a Whatsapp group dedicated to reporting crime in Weltevreden Park.

“The residents are our eyes and ears and, if they use the group correct, then we should be able to report crime easier in the area.”

He explained that the problem comes in when residents start using the crime group as a social chat group.

“The group is not there for chats and any residents that abuse the group will be deleted from the list immediately,” added Burnett.

Sector 2 manager Sergeant Nicholas Makhura said, “These groups are essential in informing police of crime and that is why I’m also part of the group and other groups like this one. I urge the community to be responsible while on the group.”

“Residents in Weltevreden Park can join the group by sending a Whatsapp message to 079 722 8252 or they can send me an email with their cellphone number, name and address,” concluded Burnett.
