SPCA West Rand branch to close shop

WEST RAND — Several animals will be moved as the SPCA is set to close its doors.

The SPCA in Roodepoort is about to see an increase in the furry animals they take care of.

The SPCA in Krugersdorp is closing its doors on 31 March due to financial constraints.

“After due consideration and evaluation of sustainable alternatives. It is simply not viable to operate a branch in the area when there are fully operational facilities in surrounding areas,”Joburg SPCA public relations officer, Jolene Beyleveld.

Manager and senior inspector at Roodepoort SPCA Mandy Cattanach said the extra animals will be more than welcome at their facility.

“We never turn away animals. With the said increase, of course, we would need more help and donations from the public but this also means that people from the Krugersdorp area will be coming to our branch.”

The Johannesburg branch would continue to assist with inspections, investigation of alleged cruelty, neglect or abuse . This would also include the collection of stray or unwanted animals.

She added “people wishing to surrender animals to the SPCA would be the neighbouring SPCAs in Randburg and Roodepoort. There are also other animal welfare organisations in the area who take in unwanted animals.”

Residents are encouraged to adopt an animal before the centre closes down. SPCAs are community-driven organisations and depend on local residents for financial support. “Each SPCA relies on its community for involvement to enable sustainability.”

To ensure that no animal suffers as a result of restructuring, inspectors have been arranged to visit what would soon be the former premises to ensure that no animal is left there.

“The closure of the premises in Krugersdorp was not a quick or easy decision. It was made with a long-term view, taking into account the current and projected economic situation. The priority is ensuring the best provision for the care of animals.”
