JOBURG – South Africans citizens will soon apply for the Smart ID cards at major banks.

According to Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba, FNB, Standard Bank and Nedbank have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Home Affairs for the pilot.

“At the moment there are three banks that have come on board and we have signed a memorandum of understanding to start a pilot process with them,” he said.

Gigaba informed that there are new innovations that are going to be introduced by the Department in the course of the next financial years to assist South Africans in applying for their Smart ID cards and passports.

To date over one million Smart ID cards have been issued.
