VIDEO: Police helicopter lands in Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens

POORTVIEW – Honeydew Police and K9 Dog Unit combine forces to apprehend two criminals involved in an ATM robbery that took place at Retail Crossing Shopping Centre.

Workers inside the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens got the fright of their lives when a police helicopter landed in the gardens on 17 February.

Spokesperson Ronny Tshabalala said, “It was something to see as the chopper landed just after 2pm and police officers started jumping out in hot pursuit of three criminals who had slipped into the gardens, disguised as workers.”

Honeydew Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs explained that the three criminals were involved in an ATM robbery at around 1.30 pm. They stole an undisclosed amount of money from a woman at an ATM close to the Retail Crossing Shopping Centre on Nic Diederichs Boulevard. “The chase ensued from Nic Diederichs toward the Botanical Gardens in Poortview. Our officers lost the suspects, who were driving a black Opel Corsa, but luckily the K9 Dog Unit noticed them entering the gardens.”

She continued and said the suspects entered the gardens and a police helicopter landed inside the gardens where officers managed to apprehend two suspects.

“We are still on the lookout for the third suspect, but if anyone has additional information, they can contact the Honeydew Police Station.”

W/O Jacobs explained that the suspects had no firearms on them and this was confirmed by the woman that was robbed in Wilgeheuwel.

“We urge the public to be vigilant when using ATMs as these criminals are very quick with swopping the cards and obtaining the Pin numbers,” concluded W/OJacobs.
