Man proofed recipes that won’t burn down the kitchen

ROODEPOORT — Simple recipes for every man hoping to spoil their Valentine.

Valentine’s Day is a dreadful experience for single people and for several guys across the world.

The 2015 man, however, is stepping it up a notch and grabbing the bulls by the horn for his partner on the day. The best way to surprise your special Valentine without blowing the budget is by cooking a special and romantic meal for them.

This can be daunting for both men and women. Firstly, because a man in the kitchen could be a frightening experience for any woman and because ordinary guys are, ever so often, quite clueless about preparing delectable meals.

When it is done right, of course, the vision of your man in an apron cooking up a storm just for you is enough to make you weak at the knees.

Guys, you will want to cook something impressive but not too difficult to make.

● Try a salt-roasted whole fish dish or better yet, a well-roasted chicken will never let you down. You can serve either of these dishes with a crisp green salad or fresh crusty bread.

● Always plan ahead for dessert. You can try your hand at baking a chocolate cake which will melt any heart. The simpler route is to go for ice-cream with fresh berries and chocolate truffles.

● Risotto. This dish is low-maintenance and has amazing texture (when done right). Serve with slices of prosciutto with crumbled goat’s cheese.

Dishes to avoid:

● Lobster. It may be decadent but lobster is also messy to prepare and it is best for everyone if the festivities don’t begin with your partner watching you kill something.

● Extensive menus. Valentine’s Day dinner should not involve you cooking for more than an hour and a half from start to finish. Nobody wants to eat their dinner close to midnight.

● Anything heavy. Red meat with pastas or fried food can sometimes end badly.
