A delicious addition to the month of love

MULDERSDRIFT — The gloves come off at Silverstar's culinary cook off.

Three teams competed for bragging rights and a spot on Vigour and Verve’s menu with a culinary competition at Silverstar Casino on 10 February.

With Silverstar’s Executive Chef George Georgio and celebrity Chef Benny Masekwameng as part of the judging panel, the cook-off began for the winning pizza that would be included on Vigour and Verve’s menu during the month of love.

The teams of two, comprised of chefs from Silverstar’s complex and a local person.

“This is a great way to embrace the relationship with Chef Benny and an opportunity to showcase the chefs at Silverstar to our local community and media. We will have more of these events but the next one will be slightly different,” said Silverstar communications manager, Tara Nicholas.

Local guests and media were part of the judging panel for the winning pizza. While chefs Benny and George judged more critically, it was a great mix of different opinions and flavours, however, there could only be one winner.

“Everybody did a fantastic job all round and the unique tastes and bases were great. I loved all of them but there can only one team that wins,” Chef George said before announcing the winner.

In third place, was the team of Chef Elliot and Dalace, who surprised everyone with a Mediterranean flavour. Second place was awarded to Chef Kerwin and Janine, who created a bacon and avo pizza.

The first prize was awarded to the team of Shona and Chef Frank, who created a pizza with avocado, salmon and feta on a non-traditional cheesy base.

Masterchef SA judge, Benny Masekwameng added, “Congratulations to all our chefs and everyone that helped us judge. We loved that we had ordinary people judging the pizzas because while Chef George and I judge technical, you guys judge on tastes and presentation and that plays a big part.”
