DA mourns passing of South African literary giant Prof André P Brink

Brink died on his way back from Europe after receiving an honorary degree in Belgium.

The novelist suffered a stroke last year and was narrowed to a wheelchair.

In the ’60s Prof Brink was one of the key figures in the significant Afrikaans literary movement known as Die Sestigers (The Sixty-ers), along with Ingrid Jonker.

He made a significant impact on the literary world, writing in both English and Afrikaans and was renowned for several contributions that highlighted the issues concerning apartheid.

He used Afrikaans as a language to speak out against the Apartheid government.

Prof Brink was also the proud author of the first Afrikaans novel to be banned by the Apartheid government.

DA national spokesperson Marius Redelinghuys said, “He will be remembered for his contribution to the fight against Apartheid and for highlighting contemporary social issues in democratic South Africa through his writing.”

Redelinghuys added that, “On behalf of the DA, I also send condolences to his friends and family and wish them strength in this difficult time.”
