Pyramids, mummies, mysteries and Dr Zahi Hawass

MULDERSDRIFT – Tutankhamun Exhibition a roaring success, thanks to visit from world-renowned Egyptologist.

Egypt. The mere mention of the name conjures images in the mind of adventure, mystery and grandeur. This is exactly what the Tutankhamun Exhibition at Silverstar Entertainment venue offers.

A recent visit and presentation by famous Egyptologist Doctor Zahi Hawass made the exhibition even more spectacular as he shared his insights and experiences in Egyptian archaeology.

“I have always worked in and around the pyramids,” began Dr Hawass. “But I never thought I would do so much work in the Valley of Kings. Up to date, we have now discovered 64 tombs in the valley.”

Dr Hawass continued to explain that all these tombs were beautifully decorated with golden seals. “Like the ‘Book of Gates’. In front of every gate there was a snake. This snake would ask the King who stands before it to answer a question and when answered correctly, the said King could go through to eventually meet Osiris in the afterlife.”

This was just one example of the multitude of wonders and wisdoms Dr Hawass shared with the audience among many others of grave robbers, treasure troves and the marvels of ancient Egyptian royalty.

The purpose of Dr Hawass’ presentations, he continued, is to promote tourism in Egypt because after the Egyptian coup d’état in 2013, the country saw a drastic decline in tourism figures, a form of income many Egyptians have depended on for decades.

“Egypt is safe,” stated Dr Hawass matter-of-factly. “We want the world to know that in no other country will a tourist be safer, than on the streets of Egypt.”

The King Tut Exhibition – His tomb and his treasures – will still be on display at the Globe, Silverstar, till 15 March, although the organisers have hinted that the exhibition time will be extended due to the overwhelming response they have received since its inception last year.

“More than 30 000 people have come to see it,” said exhibition representative, Debra De Souza. “We also have exciting projects coming up with local schools like Maragon in February.”

School groups are encouraged to explore the exhibition and take part in this Egyptian adventure. School group rates are available on request.
