From a 100 to top 12

RUIMSIG – Du Plessis thinks back on his Mr SA journey.

Resident and one of the finalists in the Mr SA competition Armand du Plessis surprised fans and family when he took the 2015 Mr SA title at a prestigious finale that took place at Engedi (close to the Cradle of Humankind) on 28 January.

Du Plessis takes a look at his journey during 2014 while he was still a finalist.

“It all started last year in February when 100 hopefuls entered the Mr SA competition and it was soon narrowed down to 50 and then 25.”

He explained that in October the Top 25 headed off to a reality week where they had to face a couple of challenges. “It was a mix between physical and mental exercises that we had to compete in and at the end of the week the Top 12 were chosen.”

According to Du Plessis, the most rewarding part of the journey was the projects that the Top 12 had to do. “I did various projects that involved hosting a blanket run and visited various schools to do drug campaigns with them and each project was challenging on a different level and all of them were rewarding in different ways.

“The finale started off with a swim wear competition and it moved over to casual and it finally ended with formal dress. It was interesting to see the mix of outfits and there were one or two interesting ones.”

He explained that the finalists were then narrowed down to the Top 5 where each one had to answer a tricky question. “Following the question, the Top 3 were chosen and then the formal dinner took place.”

The night ended with the Top 3 on stage and du Plessis was crowned as the official 2015 MR South Africa.

“It was an amazing journey and I would not trade it for anything in the world. Thanks for everyone that stood by me and supported me throughout the journey.”
