First group of squatters to be relocated

HONEYDEW MANOR - It’s all systems go as the relocation of Taylor Road squatters is scheduled to happen today.

Packed boxes and furniture is the sight that you will see when driving past the informal settlement on Taylor Road in Honeydew Manor. Sixteen of the 25 families are this morning bidding farewell to what they have called home over the past few years. They are all ready and waiting for the trucks, which are due to relocate them, to arrive. These families are being relocated to Fleurhof which is a mixed-income housing development project, situated on Main Reef Road in Roodepoort.

The remaining 13 families are still to hear if they have been allocated homes in Fleurhof and will in the meantime be moved to Ruimsig Informal Settlement.

Last night, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Housing in the City of Johannesburg Dan Bovu met with residents of Taylor Road to explain to them how the relocation will work. “Those of you who qualify and have been approved for subsidised housing will be moved to Fleurhof tomorrow morning (Thursday 29 Januray).” On the same day, Bovu met with residents from Ruimsig Informal Settlement – said to be under the formalisation programme and which has basic services like access to sanitation and water. In the meeting, he engaged with the existing Ruimsig Informal Settlement occupants with regards to incorporating the remaining families from Taylor Road into their area.

Bovu said the City will also attend to the demolition and removal of the shacks on and from the subject property and will attend to assembling and erecting thereof new structures at the Ruimsig Informal Settlement, which is all said to happen on Friday and be completed by Saturday.
