How will you remember Jackie Selebi?

WILGEHEUWEL – What legacy has the former National Police Commissioner left? Residents share on how they will remember him.

‘Corrupt top cop’ is on the top of the list of how most residents say they will remember former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi, who died on Friday 23 January.

Differing to most of the views, a Wilgeheuwel-based businessman, who refused to give his name, said he will remember Selebi as a man who served the police with integrity. “My condolences go out to his family, he was a very hard working individual, it’s just a pity that his career at the end took a bad turn. But we must not let that give us a different opinion about this good man.”

The 64-year-old died after a long illness. Selebi was found guilty of corruption in 2010 and was sentenced to 15 years in prison for taking bribes from convicted drug dealer, Glen Aglioti.

He was released on medical parole in 2012 as it was said that among other illnesses, he suffered irreversible kidney failure, stroke, diabetes, eye and heart disease. Last year, National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega responded in Parliament that they were still working out how much Selebi should pay back for his legal and medical costs.
