Drugs and arson plagues Florida

The neighbourhoods are littered with druggies committing crime to finance their next fix, often stealing from vehicles or driving under the influence of their preferred substances.

Either by hate or out of desperation in cold weather, fires are started that end up burning down business buildings and even shacks. This is the picture that statistics of the Florida Police Station’s reported crimes in 2014 paints. Arson increased an overwhelming 500% during the past year when compared to 2013, while drug-related crimes increased by 407 reported cases (131%) during 2014.

Furthermore 71.4% more trucks were hijacked last year than in 2013 and at least 40 more residences were robbed while residents were at home (a 49.4% increase).

Other shocking figures include a 25% increase in thefts from vehicles and a 29% increase in residents that are caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Not all is lost in Florida; according to the statistics, only 9 murders were reported in 2014 and 18 less sexual crime cases were opened than in 2013.

Business burglaries dramatically decreased by 10.5% while culpable homicide cases almost halved (14 cases in 2014 compared to 22 in 2013).

Less incidences of public violence were noted than in 2013. Kidnappings decreased by 58%. Generally more people were assaulted and robbed and robberies usually involved aggravating circumstances.

Shoplifting is nearly a non-issue and no stock thefts were recorded throughout the year in the precinct.
