Eskom reaches out to large property owners

Multiple benefits for those who accepts the offer.

In order to alleviate the strain on the national power grid, Eskom has approached large property owners with an offer.

Eskom will pay the property owner R3/khw if the owner will use the generator as Eskom demands.

According to Andrew Etzinger, head of Eskom’s side management Eskom has approached members of the South African Property Association (Sapoa) with the offer but says that it will not be limited to members only. Anyone with a generator exceeding 1MW can apply.

Etzinger says a meter will be attached but the owner might be required to run longer than the scheduled load shedding periods.CEO of Sapoa, Neil Gopal, says that it has send out a questionnaire to its members and is currently waiting for feedback after it was well received at the initial meeting in December.

Some of the benefits to members according to Gopal includes, capacity payment for hours scheduled to be on standby the following day; energy payment of R1.25/kWh for energy not consumed; standby notification by 15:00 for the day ahead; minimum 30 minute notification to reduce load; one to two hour reduction request per scheduled day and up to 150 load reduction events per year.
