National black-out looms

Eskom not collecting debts from its municipal customers.

South Africa could possibly be on the brink of a national black-out according to Eskom CEO Tshediso Matona.

Matona told stakeholders on Monday that it will only take one unexpected event at any of its power stations to push the country into a complete power failure. This could cause the country to be shrouded in darkness for weeks. On a previous occasion Eskom estimated that it will take two weeks to restart the power system should a national black-out occur.

Serious load shedding could be expected from next week according to Matona.

According to Professor Raymond Parsons from the North West University Business School, who was one of the 100 representative who attended the high level meeting, Eskom’s inability to power the country would be critical for its economy in 2015. He also expressed his concern over the fact that the current state of affairs will negatively affect investor confidence.

Matona contradicted himself by saying that Eskom is not in trouble. Eskom was also criticised for punishing farmers who can not pay but that there are no consequences for Eskom’s municipal debtors.
