JMPD to the rescue

ZANDSPRUIT - Help slowly coming in for Zandspruit fire victims.

Relief is pouring in for the distraught families that were left homeless by a fire that destroyed their homes in Zandspruit on 1 January.

On 9 January, Metro Police joined the other organistaions who donated much-needed essentials to the affected families.

Handing over the food and groceries, Metro Police Ward Commander for Zandspruit Sergeant Wandile Mrubata told community members that he was deeply touched when he heard the news.

“I immediately cut my holiday short as I was on leave and saw the need to come here and see how I can help.”

Mrutha, together with his colleagues, donated clothes, blankets and groceries to the fire victims.

Ward councillor of the area Maureen Scheeman, said she was pleased to see how positively local organisations responded to help the destitute families. “Our churches have been wonderful, including the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and local businesses have really helped the families during this hard times.” She also applauded Metro Police officers for doing what they did. “This is heartwarming to see that the police see themselves as part of this community. What they did will go down with good memories for the residents.”

Schneeman highlighted that though they are pleased with food and clothing donations, they were in dire need to receive building material donations. “The families need to rebuild their homes and they don’t have anything at this point.” The affected families are currently housed at a one-roomed community centre and some of them are accommodated by their compassionate neighbours. “Nothing regarding the current situation is ideal, as now they are deprived of their privacy.”

Schneeman said she was working on getting building material donations for the homeless families.
