Just when South Africans were getting back into the groove of things and assured there would be no scheduled power cuts, Eskom has rolled out load shedding across the country.
The power utility tweeted: “Due to electricity demand that has exceeded the supply; Eskom implemented load shedding stage 1 from 11am until 10pm.”
Despite City Power giving the all clear that the lights would be on this week, the country’s power grid has buckled under pressure.
Affected areas including Wigeheuwel and Honeydew, which have been without electricity since 11am.
“We have just received the load shedding schedule from Eskom and we will put up the times on our site as well,” stated Sol Masolo, City Power spokesperson. “We ask people to bear with us.”
According to the power supplier, the current system remains vulnerable, meaning that extra load or faults in the system may necessitate the need to implement load shedding.
One resident from Radiokop, Hilary White, says the long hours that they have been subjected to load shedding simply make it impossible to perform regular household chores.
“It is ridiculous that we have to live this way. Last year, we would often go without electricity for eight hours.”
