It is business as usual at Pikitup

JOBURG - Pikitup announce that there will be no service interruptions during the festive season.

The waste management company of the City of Johannesburg, Pikitup, announced that all its services (household refuse collection, recyclables, bulk, dailies and landfill sites) will be in full swing during the festive holidays, including public holidays (16 and 26 December 2014 and 1 January 2015) in the City, except on 25 December 2014.

All street cleaning activities and garden sites services will operate as normal throughout the festive period, except on Christmas and New Year’s Day, respectively. However, street cleaning will take place on 1 January 2015 in the Inner City (Hillbrow and adjacent areas) only and thereafter continue as usual in other parts of the City.

There will be no street cleaning and refuse collection in the Inner City on New Year’s Eve (31 December 2014) due to violent behaviour of revellers ushering in the New Year. This decision aims to ensure the safety of Pikitup workers.

However, plans have been put in place to clear the Inner City on the morning of 1 January 2015.

Member of the Mayoral Council (MMC) for Environment, Infrastructure and Services Department (EISD) Matshidiso Mfikoe, urged all residents of the City to become active participants in preserving and protecting the environment by applying the basic principles of waste management: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle when disposing waste.

“The residents of Johannesburg are not allowed to hand over gifts to waste removal staff during their routine operations of collecting refuse from their households. Pikitup employees are forbidden from soliciting Christmas gifts from members of the public, as this goes against company policy for staff to take part in this tradition,” said Mfikoe.

“All residents are advised to report imposters and staff who approach or harass them for gifts or donations. Corporate governance and zero tolerance to corruption are of critical importance to Pikitup. We will leave no stone unturned in rooting out corrupt officials and practices,”she added.

Any irregular activities can be reported to the South African Police Services or contact the City of Johannesburg’s 24/7 toll-free hotline on 0800 00 25 87, which is manned in all 11 official languages.
