METRO – Places where we can visit commemorate Madiba across South Africa

A year has passed since the passing of Nelson Mandela.

The following are places that people could visit and capture the history and spirit of Madiba.

A trip to Robben Island and its museum could help people see where Mandela spent his many years in prison. Spend some time in his prison cell and absorb the atmosphere of the significant World Heritage Site.

The Mandela Museum, in Mthatha: The constantly evolving legacy of Madiba is housed in the museum, with its two main sites,

the Nelson Mandela Youth and Heritage Centre in Qunu, and the Bhunga building in Mthatha.

Mandela Capture Site, Howick, is the place were Nelson Mandela was taken into custody by police at the start of his 27-year incarceration.

Mandela House Museum, Soweto situated at 8115 Vilakazi Street is where Nelson Mandela lived with his second wife Winnie, and their two children from the late ’40s.

Liliesleaf Heritage Site, Johannesburg once known as Liliesleaf Farm. This heritage site in Sandton is linked to the Rivonia Treason Trial that led to Nelson Mandela’s incarceration.

Constitution Hill, Johannesburg. The ‘Old Fort’ prison housed many political prisoners – including Nelson Mandela, who was detained there during the 1956 Treason Trial.

The Nelson Mandela Bridge was constructed in Johannesburg and it links the areas of Braamfontein and Newtown.

Nelson Mandela Square: The Nelson Mandela statue in the Nelson Mandela Square, in Sandton, is a favourite place for tourists to have photographs taken.

There’s another well-known Nelson Mandela statue in Cape Town at the entrance to the Groot Drakenstein Prison.

Alexandra Yard Precinct in Johannesburg: Not many are aware that Nelson Mandela stayed in the township of Alexandra when he first came to Johannesburg from the Eastern Cape. Visit the one-room house on Stanley Road where Madiba lived.
