Opinion: Thoughts on Madiba

The record asked residents whether they miss former president Nelson Mandela.

Modisaotsile Mhlongo (Princess): “I miss him. He took this country from nowhere and look where we are now. Tata touch all of us in a positive way and I respect him for that. He is the real son of the soil. I really don’t have any words to describe what he has done for all of us.”
Njabulo Zulu (Dobsonville): “I observed the three minutes of silence because he still means everything to us in this country, especially for those who were previously oppressed. We have freedom because of him”
Thandokazi Mbanyarhu (Princess): “He means a lot to us because he helped us obtain freedom. His legacy still lives on, our parents have RDP houses and the poorest get grants to survive. He has played a huge part in our lives.”
Rudi Kruger (Helderkruin): “He was the best president this country has ever had although I won’t miss him. He was an open and modest person who loved all races.”
Pat van As (Krugersdorp): “Everybody should be doing something to commemorate Madiba because he has had a huge impact In our lives. I miss him because we have not had a better president than him, someone who was so respectable.”
Maria Jacob (Princess): “He is resting with the father about so I wish he can rest in peace. I just wish that he is at peace with us.”
Poppie van Tonder (Roodepoort North): “Although I don’t miss him, he did make this country a better place and I wish he would come back if it was possible because that we still need him as a leader. He is better than the leaders we have now.”
Janeke Schoeman (Witpoortjie): “I miss him because he made the country and the world a better place. Although I did nothing to commemorate his passing, I will do what I can.”
Andrew Venter (Roodepoort): “Even though he has left us, his philosophies are still being followed and he set a great example for those who come after him.”
Steve van de Merwe (Roodepoort): “Madiba was a historical figure in my life since a young age and he still plays a big role even today. I am hoping that his legacy lives on especially when it comes to nation building because we need that.”
