Beware of shady repair companies

STRUBEN'S VALLEY – Do your homework before approaching repair companies, warns resident.

Resident Martie van Niekerk fell prey to an advert that indicated a discount for pensioners.

“My washing machine started giving me problems – and it’s an expensive appliance to replace – so I phoned a man that states that he gives pensioners a discount and his team arrived the next day.”

The advert stated clearly that a discount will be given to pensioners but it never indicated how much.

“All of the other quotes were in the R800 to R900 region and I thought with the discount I might be paying a lot less.”

She phoned the repair company in the hope of saving but ended up paying R850 for the repairs.

“I’m a retired citizen and R850 is a lot of money for me to pay, so I confronted the repairmen and asked them where my discount was but they failed to supply me with an answer.”

Van Niekerk added that she called the owner of the business that lowered the price to R750.

“I don’t mind paying for good service but in this instance the service was bad and the work was shoddy, as I discovered when I noticed the sticky tape at the back of the washing machine.”

She mentioned that a week after they repaired her machine it started giving problems again.

“Before calling out a company to come and repair something, make sure that they will be able to deliver the work as promised, do your homework,” concluded Van Niekerk.
