Service delivery reaches Kloofendal greenbelt

"The whole programme could take up to three months to complete, but we're confident that this will please residents in terms of municipality issues in the area."

Residents would be pleased to know that a two or three-month clean-up and restoration operation has just commenced between Honey Hills, Constantia Kloof, Noordekrans and Kloofendal.

The Integrated Citizens’ Outreach Programme (Icop) officially commenced on Thursday 27 November. DA councillor Carl Mann, the brains behind the operation, explained what’s to come to the record.

“This is a general clean-up, restoration programme that we are running in the area, especially focused on the Kloofendal greenbelt,” Mann said.

Mann and a team of dedicated residents that form part of the Kloofendal Resident’s Association got various City of Johannesburg departments involved in the operation, including City Parks, City Power, Joburg Water, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), Pikitup, Urban Management, Home Affairs and Integrated Service Delivery (ISD). Florida police and metro police (JMPD) are involved to keep the operation running smoothly.

Thursday saw the initiation of the programme on Christiaan de Wet Road near Jim Fouche Road. The first phase of the programme will have various departments assessing and restoring a section of the area wedged between Christiaan de Wet Road, Jim Fouche Road and Wilhelmina Avenue. From there, the programme will extend to either side of Christiaan de Wet Road and down the hill to Hendrik Potgieter Road.

“The whole programme could take up to three months to complete, but we’re confident that this will please residents in terms of municipality issues in the area.

“Cleaning up the greenbelt could also help prevent crimes in the area, as it is seen as an easy escape route,” said Mann.

On Thursday various departments got to work mowing the sidewalks down Christiaan de Wet Road, assessing the state of the roads and traffic lights and picking up litter in the area. Some changes to the area were already visible over the weekend.

The programme is expected to complete in February next year.
