Save electricity over the holidays

RANDBURG – City Power and 49M Know Your Number campaign provide some useful ways to save electricity during the festive season.

There are many ways you can save electricity during the holiday season.

According to City Power Spokesperson Sydney Mphahlele, you can “switch off electrical appliances like geysers, pool pumps, air conditioners and other appliances” that continue to use electricity when you are away.

Furthermore, according to the 49M Know Your Number campaign you can save electricity by doing the following:

  • Use LED Christmas lights and fibre optic decorations. LED lights use 90 per cent less energy than traditional Christmas lights. Decorations lit by fibre optics use only one light bulb instead of many.
  • Limit the time you leave your Christmas lights on. Put a reminder on your calendar and turn them off for a set period each day.
  • Turn off the lights in your living room when the Christmas tree is lit. The tree will provide enough light on its own.

The campaign aims to encourage South Africans to be drivers for social and behavioural change and to encourage everyone to ‘Live Lightly’ [see previous article https://bit.ly/1zu8GyC].

To calculate your electricity usage, visit www.49m.co.za. Mphahlele added that residents should ensure that their home security systems are working, and pay their electricity accounts in full, before going on holiday.
