Gun fire wakes up residents

LITTLE FALLS – About 12 gun shots heard in the early morning hours on 25 November.

Residents in the area had a ‘rude awakening’ when a couple of gunshots woke them up at around 2 am on 25 November.

Werner Hattingh said, “The gun shots that woke us up sounded like automatic rifle shots because it was rapid fire.”

He added, “Being an ex-policeman I know what different types of guns sound like and I’m certain that I heard four 9mm pistol shots and about eight automatic rifle shots that must have been fired from a high calibre rifle.”

Another resident in the area, Frida Willis added that she also heard the shots. “Crime in the area is of a concern to us as it affects the safety of our families.”

Hattingh said he opened a page on Facebook called ‘Northside Community Page’ because of his concern about the safety of residents. “People could list anything that’s bothering them (on this page) and the community would all pitch in.”

After the shooting various community members and residents commented on the page and added that they also heard the shots going off.

Honeydew Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs said she is still trying to establish exactly what happened but will report back to the public should the police have more information available.

“If anyone has more information about the cause of the gun shots, they can add a comment on the community page,” concluded Hattingh.
