UPDATE: Monash responds to Mugabe’s nephew apparent suicide

RUIMSIG - Monash University responds to the alleged suicide reports of Zimbabwean president's nephew.

Marketing director of Monash University South Africa Jeffwin Leckran has this morning confirmed that the university has met with the family of the deceased student Takudzwa Wesley Goronga.

Reports suggest that Goronga, who was nephew to Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, committed suicide at his residence. “One misconception that I would like to clarify is that the student passed away at private housing facilities adjacent to Monash University and not at the campus itself.”

Leckran said a memorial service was held at the university with the deceased’s family members. He could not elaborate on details of the incident. “We are unable to give any specific information regarding the incident out of respect for the family and the investigations currently underway,”explained Leckran.

He added that counsellors were made available at the campus to help their students who need support during this difficult period.

Goronga was a final year information technology student at Monash University in Ruimsig. He was reported missing at the Honeydew Police Station two weeks ago.

Spokesperson for Provincial Police Captain Augustinah Selepe confirmed that Goronga was found dead by university staff members on 12 November.

It is understood that Goronga was found dead inside a wardrobe and it was alleged that the deceased committed suicide. Reports of an alleged suicide note written on social media has surfaced. It is reported that the deceased wrote a suicide note on microblogging and social network site Tumblr.

Malila said they are still waiting for forensic results to determine how Goronga died. He could not divulge more information and explained that most questions surrounding the case were part of their investigation and he could not give out more information.
