Taxi strike paralyses Johanneburg

Matriculants unable to get to exams on time.

Thousands of commuters woke up this morning stranded due to an unannounced taxi strike.
Although the reasons for the strike are unclear it is believed that some of the taxi owners’ griefs include harassment by metro police, the issue of non-subsidization and e-tolling. It is also suspected that the introduction of the A re yeng bus service in Tshwane could be a factor.
The South African National Taxi Council has said they did not order the strike and do not support it.
One of the biggest concerns of the strike is the large amount of matriculants writing exams that could not reach their schools in time.
JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar has asked motorists to avoid Johannesburg CBD between 10am and 1pm since the taxi owners and drivers are planning a protest in the city.
Local taxi association, the Dobsonville Roodepoort Lenasia Johannesburg Taxi Association’s (Dorljota) spokesperson Zeblon Simelane could not be reached for comment.
