Safety tips to remember during the festive season

ROODEPOORT – johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson says residents should keep their eyes and ears open in order to keep their families safe during the festive season.

With the festive season upon us, Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi shares some safety tips.

“People will be visiting the ocean and swimming pools during the festive season and one of the easiest ways to make your pool safer at home is to install a fence around it and secure the pool. If you want to swim but you can’t, then one can visit a swim centre were experts will be able to teach you how to swim.”

He added that another danger is swimming in rivers, streams and dams. “The water current in rivers can be unpredictable and strong and it is very difficult to judge how deep the water level is.”

“Fires are also a big concern during the festive period and we urge residents to never leave candles unattended and to keep heaters away from curtains as they can catch fire easily. Another problem, especially, in informal settlements is that people use candles when filling up their paraffin stoves and that is how most of the fires break out in settlements.”

Keep your emergency numbers – 10177 and 112 handy in case of an emergency.
