Three killed in accident on N1
ROODEPOORT – Taxi overturns near Maraisburg off-ramp, leaving injured strewn across highway.
Three people, two men and one woman, tragically lost their lives on the N1 Highway near Maraisburg on 5 November when a taxi’s tyre had burst, causing it to overturn.
Spokesperson for ER24 Russell Meiring stated that when paramedics arrived on scene, they were met with mass casualties strewn across the highway.
“Three people have been killed and 17 others injured, six of them critically,” continued Meiring. “A number of the patients remained trapped under the vehicle and rescue services used the Jaws of Life to free them.”
Meiring added that advanced life-support had to be provided for the critically injured, while two ER24 helicopters airlifted them to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment.
Local authorities are investigating. Metro Police could not be reached for comment at this stage.
