‘Tis the season of giving

RUIMSIG — Christmas celebration begin early for hundreds of well-deserving children

Christmas trees, little elves and even Santa Claus were all geared up for a Christmas special like no other.

While 1 November may be a bit premature for Christmas celebrations, the students at Monash University in Ruimsig, treated local charities with the gift of giving at their annual Christmas in November Carnival.

The university teamed up with the local community to host more than 400 children from local schools, orphanages and early childhood development centres. Each child received a gift on the day and got to enjoy a day of fun and games at the Monash sport field.

Head of community engagement at the university, Craig Rowe said, “Christmas in November is a highlight at Monash South Africa as children, students, academics and local businesses all come together to make a difference. It is also a celebration of the caregivers and teachers that work tirelessly all year to nurture the future leaders of our country.”

Students from the institutions signed up as volunteers and Santa’s little helpers; handing out presents to little ones or working the music decks.

The annual event is part of the institution’s vast community engagement projects and has more than 1 500 students partaking in community initiatives every year.
