Women crushed against wall by taxi

One patient evacuated by helicopter.

Two women aged 19 and 20 are in a critical condition this afternoon after they were hit by a taxi and pinned against a wall at the Ontdekkers and Ruhama Roads intersection.

When ER24 paramedics arrived on scene, they found a mangled taxi stationed against a wall on the side of the road, according to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring.

On assessment, paramedics discovered that one woman was lying next to the taxi while another was pinned between the vehicle and the wall. Both patients were found to be in a critical condition.

Fire services had to use the jaws-of-life equipment to free the patient from between the vehicle and the wall.

Once freed, paramedics discovered that the patient’s left leg has been amputated near the knee due to the collision.

Both patients required advanced life support to stabilise their vital signs.

One of the patients was flown by a AER24 helicopter to a nearby hospital while the other patient was transported by ambulance to Helen Joseph Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
