New primary school on the cards

PANORAMA – New Primary School will make it easier and more affordable for parents in the Weltevreden Park and Honeydew areas to send their children to school.

Residents who live in Weltevreden Park, Honeydew and Wilgeheuwel had limited choices when it came to sending their children to a public school but it all will change in 2015, explained Ward 97 councillor Jaco Engelbrecht.

“The new school will be constructed next to the Panorama Sports Club on an open piece of land on the corner of John Vorster Road and Paul Kruger Avenue.”

He added, “The school will be a primary school and a high school might be built next to it if there is enough space, otherwise the high school will be constructed in another location that still has to be decided on.”

Engelbrecht explained that the school’s governing body is yet to hold a meeting to discuss whether the school will be Afrikaans or English. “I suspect that the school will be a parallel medium school that will incorporate both Afrikaans and English into its curriculum.”

According to the councillor, a sports field is also on the cards, but it depends on the size of the school and if there will be enough space for it.

“According to the Department of Education, the school will have 30 class rooms and it is set to open its doors in January. I know it sounds absurd but the school will be constructed from pre-fabricated structures and buildings that will be quicker to build than the conventional cement/brick buildings.”

“We will need to address the roads in the area and traffic flow before the school opens but this will be addressed closer to the time.”
