Scrumptious Christmas cakes on sale for charity

Buy a delicious Christmas cake to support your community with the Lions Club of Roodepoort Host.

The Lions Club of Roodepoort Host has embarked on its project of selling 1 440 Christmas cakes for charity this festive season.

It is reachable, says club president Lillian McClarty. She adds, “We’ve reached that number before”.

In the Lions Gauteng district 23 000 such cakes are sold annually before the festive season; 60 000 are sold countrywide. The 1kg cakes are non-alcoholic and aren’t iced. Profit made from the cakes will fund the many projects each Lions club embarks on during the year.

“This is one of our biggest fundraisers. Our cakes are very popular and are brought here all the way from Pinetown where they are baked and packaged,” says McClarty.

From funds raised from the Christmas cake drive and other fundraisers last year, McClarty and the Roodepoort Host members were able to refurbish the playgrounds of a crèche in Claremont near the Danie van Zyl Recreational Centre. The funds also have enabled them to run the Lions Eye Clinic in Florida and host bingo nights at local organisations like Floroma Frail Care, Tornado Park Retirement Village, Ons Huis Tehuis vir Bejaardes and West Rand Cripple Care for the physically disabled. McClarty says they also were able to donate 60 baby blankets to the Coronation Mother and Baby Hospital in Krugersdorp.

“Who doesn’t like a hearty piece of Christmas cake during the festive season?” she asked.

Cakes are available at R75 each from the Lions Club of Roodepoort Host as well as other local Lions clubs. For further information contact Robert McClarty on 083 452 7419.
