Much-needed funds raised

NORTHRIDING - Special Wings Foundation holds golf day.

Having a child with special needs herself, Weltevreden Park mother and resident Tammy Nash saw the dire need to have a foundation that would raise funds that will help with the education for children with special needs. “Sometimes these children are deprived an opportunity to get the necessary education and therapy they deserve simply because it’s too expensive,” explained Nash, who is the chairperson of the Special Wings Foundation, which is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO).

On Friday 24 October, the foundation held a golf day at Jackal Creek Golf Estate in North Riding to raise funds for the children. Corporate companies and individuals participated in the event. “We managed to raise R 20 000,” explained Nash, who added that they appreciate the continued support they receive from community members when they have such events. “At each event we see our local communities opening their hearts and wallets to assist the children.”

The foundation started off with assisting one child in 2012 and to date, they have nine children who are beneficiaries. “We have children on the waiting list and we would really like to help more but that can only be possible if we have enough sponsors.”

The foundation regularly hosts fundraising events in order to raise money. On 16 November there is a team that will be riding in the 94.7 Cycle Challenge. “We don’t have sponsors for our T-shirts and we are asking for donations for that.”

Other events they have lined up include a comedy evening at Parker’s Comedy Club, Monte Casino, on 4 November and a Christmas Market at The Barn Church in Boskruin on 22 November.
