Ward 126 continues to flourish

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Councillor positive about Ward 126 and the way forward.

Ward 126 is a ward nestled in between Beyers Naudé Drive on the west and the northern part of Christiaan de Wet Road. It consists mainly out of residential properties with three shopping centres namely: The Ridge and Palm Court Shopping Centre and Randpark Mall.

Ward councillor Mike Tonkin explained that Allen’s Nek, Weltevreden Park and Randpark Ridge are all of the suburbs in his ward.

“The ward is also lucky enough to have two vets and a clinic and we report most of our crimes to Honeydew Police Station,” said Tonkin.

The ward used to be riddled with water bursts due to aging pipes, but this is now something of the past after the City of Johannesburg in conjunction with Johannesburg Water launched an upgrade project. “The project was launched at the start of this year and we have now replaced most of the old concrete-type water pipes with new and more durable plastic pipes. This means that water bursts will be minimised.”

He added that another big upgrade in the area is Excel Park that is now looking much better after residents stepped in and cleaned up the park. “On 15 August residents and a couple of residents’ associations in conjunction with City Parks removed all of the alien plants from the park and cleaned up the stream that runs through the park. Unfortunately a pedestrian bridge collapsed after a big flood which now means that the domestic workers can’t use the park as a shortcut anymore. We are planning to rebuild the bridge and to get new fish for the stream that should beautify it again and bring some life to it.”

“We still have some outstanding service delivery issues that we hope get resolved before the end of the year,” concluded Tonkin.
