Survivor urges cancer patients to remain positive

ROODEPOORT – Breast cancer survivor tells that early detection can save lives.

Breast Cancer is a very serious cancer, according to survivor Lindelwa Songca. She was diagnosed with cancer during 2010 when she was 60 years old and her fight against cancer continues. “The main reason why I stayed positive and continued surviving was because of a support group.” She explained that she became a volunteer of the Phakamisa initiative which was launched by the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).

“This initiative helps women who have breast cancer to know more about the type of cancer that they have. We currently have about 370 volunteers who support these cancer patients across South Africa,” she said.

Songca’s advice to women who have breast cancer is to keep on fighting and staying positive. “Cancer is not a death sentence if you do self-examinations on your breasts at least once a month.”

To those who have cancer she said to stay strong and to change their eating habits. She concluded, “Go for your treatments and don’t allow denial from preventing you to do this. Join a support group and share your fears and allow yourself to be encouraged by others.”
