Learn a new language with Lingo Links.

ROODEPOORT— With Language clubs, retirees are never too old to learn a new language and engage with different groups of people

Lingo Links Language Club and the University of Third Age (U3A) Joburg North Branch held a meeting at the Randburg Gereformeerde Kerk on 2 October, to form a cooperation between the two organisations.

Both non-government organisations are linked together on the basis of providing learning and the expansion of knowledge, with Lingo Links aiding conversation groups to socialise in their favourite foreign language.

Lingo Links offers groups of people the opportunity to converse in the same or different language groups including Spanish, Chinese or French, and provides multi-national English conversations.

Rhona Wetzka, who is the founder of Lingo Links, says the idea behind the club is to brush up an acquired language, complement language studies and acquire inter-cultural friendships.

“Mother tongues form the backbone of Lingo Links and the people are mostly newcomers or immigrants who enjoy chatting in the language of their childhood once again,” she adds.

The University of the Third Age provides skills development and promotes further knowledge for the retired.

Members share their creative and educational skills through leisure activities.

With the new partnership, Lingo Links and U3A encourage professional and retired English and Afrikaans speakers to form a language club.

The aim is to include African languages from A to Z (Afrikaans to Zulu) and spread that idea across the country.

Wetzka says the only requirement is to have a basic knowledge of the foreign language you are interested in.
