Water under pressure

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Pressure relieving valves to relieve pressure on water pipes in the area.

The water pipe upgrade project is nearing its end and the most important part of the project is the installation of pressure relieving valves (PRVs).

According to the project’s community liaison officer Jan von der Heyde, the area will receive four new PRVs that will lower the pressure in the water pipes.

“The water pipes in the area have all been replaced with a modern type of plastic pipe, but this still means that if the pressures are too high, there can still be pipe bursts in the area. That is why we decided to install new PRVs.”

He added that the normal pressure of a system runs at about two bars of pressure and the new PRVs can handle pressures of up to seven bars. “The system won’t allow the pressure to exceed seven bars so this should help to minimise pipe bursts in the future.”

Von der Heyde explained that the system was tested at 20 bars.

“The good news is that we discovered no leaks in the system which means that the workers did a good job in laying all of the new water pipes in the area.We still need to complete our snag list with [other]problems that need to be sorted out before the project can come to an end. The list includes damage to properties like damaged intercoms and pavements that need to be reinstated.”

He said the water pipe system will be integrated into the municipal system once all the work has been completed.

“If any resident still has queries, they can give me a call,” concluded Von der Heyde.
