Eye care emphasised this October

Optometrists on the West Rand team up to promote eye care.

To encourage residents to exercise better eye care a local awareness day is being planned.

During International Eye Care Awareness Month this October the West Rand Eye Care Awareness Programme once again will emphasise proper care.

“Our goal is to test as many eyes possible in one day and donate the funds raised from these examinations to local causes,” says Jannus van der Molen, one of the organisers at Eyelevel, Cradlestone.

In previous years the programme proved very successful. In 2011, the participating optometrists tested 107 paying customers and assisted five residents with cataract surgery. In 2012, 138 paying customers were tested. By the end of the programme they were able to donate R40 000 to the Guide Dogs Association of South Africa.

“This year we are aiming to reach at least 150 paying customers and help more residents with cataract surgery,” says Van der Molen.

How does one go about participating? West Rand Eye Care Awareness Day will be held on Saturday 11 October with three participating optometrists – Eyelevel at Cradlestone Mall and Specsavers at both Medicross Krugersdorp and Medicross Princess Crossing.

“You can use your medical aid or pay a reduced cash price of R300 per eye test,” says Van der Molen.

The full eye test includes a prescription (where applicable) as well as a free pair of Infinity sunglasses with free anti-reflection coating from Leading Lens Lab and 25 per cent off of one’s co-payment if spectacles are made.

“It also includes a snack pack and, well, the joy of giving!,” Van der Molen says.

“We would like to thank the institutions that participated last year as well as Monument High School that continually supports us.

“We challenge other schools to rise to the occasion and join us on the day.”

As limited space is available it is recommended to book beforehand. To secure an appointment contact Elsie on 011 764 4443.
