Water issue resolved

Water and sanitation minister says there was no water shortage in Gauteng but a technical glitch due to cable theft.

After almost three weeks of frustration, confusion and outrage, minister of Water and Sanitation Nomvula Mokonyane announced that water supply in Gauteng has been restored.

Residents in parts of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Pretoria have battled with water supply for much of this month.

The minister clarified there never was a water shortage in Gauteng but rather a technical glitch due to cable theft that impacted distribution.

She says residents now can expect to see a difference.

“The situation is far better than what it was. We are certain it has stabilised. However, things still may happen that are beyond our control,” says Mokonyane.

She adds that although water has been restored in parts of Johannesburg, Pretoria and Ekurhuleni, the pressure might be low.

Meanwhile, Rand Water still urges the public to use water economically in order to allow reservoirs to fill and water pressure to return to normal.
