Man killed in Matholesville shack fire

'It is the fourth time these shacks burned.'

A 28-year-old man died when his friend’s shack caught fire. The two went out on Saturday night and returned in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

About 30 minutes after they had fallen asleep, owner of the shack Sylet Goitseone woke up gasping for breath. When he realised the shack was on fire he ran outside to call for help, leaving his visitor Boysen Sebico inside. Sebiko died while neighbours were trying to extinguish the fire by using buckets of water.

Three of the eight shacks in the yard burned.

It is said that a meat eatery is being run from one of the shacks (that also burned) in the yard. Neighbours are speculating that the fire could have started in the “restaurant”.

“It is the fourth time these shacks are burning. These guys run their business in the shack and when they knock off, they do not make sure that their fire is extinguished properly.

“It is unfortunate and heartbreaking that this time a life was lost – a visitor’s life to make it worse,” says Ratanang Monageng, owner of the stand who was in Rustenburg at the time of the incident.

Police could not be reached for comment about the incident.
