Smash-and-grab incidents on the increase

ROODEPOORT – Gordon Road and 14th Avenue two of the Smash and grab hotspots in the area.

Smash-and-grab incidents are on the rise in the area, according to Florida Blockwatch chairperson Caleb Finn. He added that the Gordon Road and 14th Avenue off-ramps are where most incidents are reported.

Motorists are warned to be vigilant during peak-hour traffic.

Honeydew police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs explained that vigilance pays off and added that motorists should remember the following smash-and-grab prevention tips:

  • Never leave your cellphone or any other valuables exposed and visible in the vehicle.
  • Be on the lookout for suspicious-looking people and do not hesitate to report them to the police.
  • When approaching the red traffic light at night, slow down so that you can only reach it when it turns green.
  • Be wary of people standing at traffic lights or intersections. They may be innocent, but perpetrators mix with these people while waiting for an opportunity to pounce.
  • Never open your vehicle window or door for any stranger.
  • If you encounter obstacles in the road like rocks or tyres, do not get out of your vehicle to remove them. Rather use a different route to reach your destination.
  • Never sit in your vehicle without being conscious of your surroundings.
  • Never leave children alone in a vehicle, not even for a moment. Let them accompany you.
