Another round of taxi violence on Ontdekkers

Taxi drivers overstepping the boundaries could be beaten up.

On Saturday 27 September chaos erupted after a taxi-related violence incident on Ontdekkers Road.

A taxi from Krugersdorp allegedly tried to pick up commuters near the pedestrian crossing on Ontdekkers Road, near Westgate Shopping Centre. Local taxi drivers caught on to the boundary betrayal and quickly made their move, eyewitnesses said on scene.

“As we understand, one taxi driver tried to operate in another’s territory and a fight ensued.

“The taxi driver was grabbed and yanked out of his taxi and ‘roughed up’ for his mistake,” a police officer on scene said.

They arrived on scene at around 8.55am.

“They proceeded to grab the taxi’s keys and threw it away, leaving the taxi stranded in the middle of the road.”

The Roodepoort Police confirmed that nobody was shot or injured seriously.

“The assaulted taxi driver immediately went to the Roodepoort Police Station to open a case of assault.”

Meanwhile, the stranded taxi caused heavy traffic delays on Ontdekkers Road. It later was removed after a spare key for it was retrieved.
