Lake Lucy and her pups to reunite annually

The offspring of the dog that united a community caused a tradition to be formed.

Months ago it was proven that a Florida community could stand together – that over a dog and her nine puppies.

Lake Lucy Brown, as she was named after she was found at Florida Lake, was rescued on 5 January. She was pregnant and urgently needed veterinary care. The community obliged, says Sarette Vos, one of the concerned residents.

“We decided not to have the pups aborted and that we would make the best of the situation,” Vos said at the time, and kept her promise.

Earlier in September Vos and other residents who adopted Lake Lucy’s puppies got together to reunite them.

“We had grown so attached to the mother and nine pups that we all homed one or two of them at our own properties,” says Vos.

What Vos calls a new tradition was started at the various community braais they held whenever a decision had to be made over the safety and care of the puppies. On Saturday 16 September the tradition was solidified.

“We could not let spring go by without another braai.

“We organised the reunion and had great fun spending the day in the sun.

“It was wonderful to see all 10 dogs together once again – they still got along wonderfully despite living separately.” Each of the puppies was named ‘water’ but in different languages

Vos says the owners of all the dogs will have an annual reunion on the dogs’ birthday, 18 January.

“Thank you to Dr Dolman (veterinarian), my sister Linda and the rescue team once again for all your dedication and help.

“We appreciate everything from the bottom of our hearts.”
