JOBURG – How will Rand Water and Joburg Water avoid another water crisis.

The recent water crisis in several suburbs in Joburg this week, has really highlighted the importance of having access to clean running water.

You can use candles when the lights are out and you can order in or braai, but when there is no water, there is not much you can do. Households across Joburg were stranded without any water for more than eight days.

This was caused by a power outage which resulted in water not being pumped into the reservoirs that feed these areas. Although power was restored, the water could not be pumped fast enough into the reservoirs, which prolonged the water shortage.

My question is, why is there no contingency plans for situations like this? Yes, there were water tanks provided, but not in all areas. Water is a basic necessity and if there is a problem like this, you would think there are plans in place to make sure no person is left without a drop of water.

I think ratepayers deserve a better explanation as to what plans will be implemented in future to avoid another crisis.
