Culpable homocide, drug-related crime increased

More drug- and alcohol-related crimes have been reported in 2013 than in 2012.

Malicious crimes such as arson, malicious damage to property and the neglect and ill treatment of children has decreased since 2012.

According to crime statistics released by Crime Stats SA and the South African Police Service arson offences are down by 42.9 per cent since 2012, and a tremendous 55.56 per cent over the past 10 years.

The occurrence of malicious damage to property has decreased by 6.94 per cent since 2012.

39 per cent less cases of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition have been opened than in 2012.

However, drug-related crime has increased by nearly 20 per cent since 2012 and an astounding 200 per cent in the past ten years (since 2004).

At least 132 per cent more residents have been reported to have been driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs over the past year.

Commercial crime has been a more regular occurrence, being up 11.3 per cent since 2012. Moreover, nearly 40 per cent more residents were convicted of culpable homocide last year. Public violence has increased a horrifying 900 per cent over the past two years and at least 150 per cent considering 2012’s statistics.

Residents will be happy to learn that 50 per cent less cases of neglect and ill-treatment of children has been opened last year. The regularity of such cases has decreased by 81 per cent since 2004.
