Roodepoort crime stats: Murder down

Crime remained unchanged over past year.

According to the crime statistics released today by Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko, crime in the Roodepoort precint has increased by 0,4 per cent in the past year.

In the previous measured year 9 824 cases were handled as opposed to 9 863 in the past year. The statistics do show though that since 2004 the total crime in Roodepoort has gone down by 23,8 per cent.

In the past year in Roodepoort –

• murder has decreased by 6,4 per cent (73 cases in 2013/14) but has increased in the past ten years by nine per cent (67 cases in 2004)

• sexual crimes have increased by 18 per cent but decreased by one per cent in the past ten years

• attempted murder has decreased by 26,6 per cent and decreased by 50,51 per cent in the past ten years

• assault with the intend to do grievous bodily harm has risen by 2,1 per cent but has declined over the past ten years by 21,7 per cent

• common assault, common robbery and robbery with aggravating circumstances have all declined by 11,4 per cent, 17,9 per cent and 3,72 per cent respectively

• there were 25 kidnappings compared to none in 2004
